Getting organised for Semester Two

As Semester Two gets underway we thought we’d pass on some reminders about making the most of the Library and being organised in your studies:

Get extra help in essay writing, finding information, referencing, analysing data or IT Skills via the Skills for Learning  programme of free workshops – just book via their website. Alternatively you could watch or listen to one of their recorded workshops or podcasts or take a look at their web resources.

If you’re searching for information for your assignments or dissertations take a look the Subject Guides on the Library website. These will direct you to the right information for your topic and if you still need help you can book a one-to-one appointment with your Academic Librarian.

Connect your mobile devices to eduroam for the fastest and most secure access to the internet when you’re on campus and  download Microsoft Office 365 and SPSS so you have the software you need wherever you are working. But always save and back up your work so you don’t lose it and have to do it all again!

 

Don’t leave sorting our your references and bibliographies until the very end of your piece of work – keep a record as you go along and use Quote Unquote as a guide.

If you ever get stuck with MyBeckett or Turnitin we have online guides to talk you through finding your way around and submitting assignments and when it comes to submitting your Semester 2 Turnitin assignments, remember to check your file type and file size against Turnitin’s rules and requirements before submitting.

Searching for information, writing and printing your assignments can often take more time than you think – use the Assignment Calculator to help you plan. And book your Student Meeting Room in plenty of time to get together to discuss any group assignments.

Library behind the scenes…meet one of our Academic Librarians

Hello, my name is Laurence Morris, and I am one of the two Academic Librarians for Health and Social Sciences, looking after the Library services for staff and students of Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Sports and Exercise Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Youth and Community Development, Social Work, Playwork, Mental Health, Art Therapy, other Psychological Therapies and Nursing.

Essentially, my job is to ensure that the students, researchers and academic staff of these subject areas have access to the library resources which they need. In practice this makes my role enjoyably varied – it involves lecturing large groups of students on how best to use the Library, one-to-one appointments to assist individuals with their specific work, maintaining subject-specific support pages on the Library website, providing referencing tuition, supporting researchers, advising on open access publishing, allocating the acquisition budget for the subject areas I support, and – most importantly – extensive liaison with staff and students, both to see what they want from the Library and to ensure that they are aware of everything that the Library can do for them.

In practice, cliché as it might be, this means that there’s no such thing as a typical day! Usually, though, I come to work expecting to teach for two or three hours (whether one-to-one or to large groups), attend one or two liaison meetings, and then spend the remainder of the time working on any ongoing tasks from the list above. In reality, my plan for the day rarely survives first contact with email or voicemail – there’s usually something happening to react to! If I find that I have six emails from students on one course, all asking for help with the same topic, then that’s a good sign that I should speak to their tutor and arrange to provide additional support to their whole class ASAP, rather than spending my free time ordering a couple more textbooks!

The variety is definitely what I like most about the job. The diversity of the Academic Librarian role enables me to use all of my past professional experience to help students – and there’s usually a real feel of doing something useful. At the end of the day, I can always go home thinking of something tangible I’ve done to assist someone with their studies.

On the basis of common questions I receive, there are two tips that I would pass on to any students reading this:

  • Your library subject pages can often be very helpful, providing a range of subject-specific advice and guidance. Rather than working in isolation, this is your chance to benefit from the accumulated wisdom of past students, academics and librarians!
  • If I’m ever not round, you can still contact the Library – and have your questions answered 24/7.

Finally… when not in the Library, I’m a keen hillwalker and mountaineer, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society earlier this year. Some of the photos from my outings to places like Lapland, Hong Kong and the Sierra Nevada are viewable online.

Assignment Deadline!

You can’t put it off any longer. Your assignment deadlines are looming and it’s time to focus!

Luckily the Library is open 24/7 so you can avoid all those distractions at home and come in and study whenever suits you best.

Make sure you choose the right study environment, whether you need to work in a group or in silence. We have now have a brand new group study room in LS105 at Sheila Silver Library and you can take a virtual tour of the room before you visit!

If you’re working on a group project you can also book a Student Meeting Room to help you prepare.141201_library-city_dsc_6761

Don’t forget to take regular breaks as well, and keep hydrated (water fountains are in JG250 in Headingley Library and on the first, second and third floors of Sheila Silver Library).

Or if you do study better at home you can access over 140,000 electronic resources from your own laptop; get advice 24/7 via Library Chat and even send your work to a Library printer and pick it up when you come in.

If you need help with formatting, page numbers and generally making your assignments look pretty then take a look at the Skills for Learning resources or book on one of their workshops. 

Please save your work regularly.   If you’re submitting your assignment in hard copy make sure you have topped up your Campus Card with credit and give yourself time to bind your work if you need to. Help on printing and binding is available on the Library website. And remember if you’re graduating this year only top up your print account with small amounts.

MyBeckett have a fantastic “Assignment Survival Guide” to help you if you are submitting online. (Go to the Assessment section and click Assignment Survival Guide). There’s also information about Turnitin if you’ve been asked to submit through this, including a video to guide you through the process.

But whether it’s online or in print please take the Library’s advice (we do have many years of experience!) and don’t leave it all until the last minute (or even hour!).  Skills for Learning’s assignment calculator is a great tool to help you plan your time.

 

 

 

Remote (but not too remote) services…

Ever wondered who answers your calls, emails and chats when you get in touch with the Library?!?

Well, hopefully you already know that you can contact the Library 24/7 from wherever you are.  Our friendly team of Library staff work across both campuses answering your phone calls, emails and chatting live with you to help with all your Library and student IT queries.  We have a dedicated out of hours chat and phone service so whether you prefer to work at 10am or 10pm there will always be someone to reset your password or help you with your research enquiry.

Last month we dealt with over 800 phone calls, 700 emails and over 400 chats and pride ourselves on replying to your query as quick as possible (that’s within 3 hours Monday – Friday 08:30-18:30 or within 24 hours outside of these hours)
